One of England’s finest stately homes, Arundel Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk and has commanded the striking landscape of the Sussex Downs for almost a thousand years. The unique Stumpery is home to the upturned roots ...

Programme Change

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Marina Christopher is unavailable for the planned talk on Wednesday 25th May. Instead, we are fortunate to have secured Vicky Coral to talk about the Chelsea Physic Garden. Since 1673, Chelsea Physic Garden has occupied four acres of land on the edge of the Thames. First established by the Apothecaries in order to grow medicinal plants, this extraordinary garden in London has had wide reaching impact around the world. Furzey Gardens visit, 13th September 2021

Furzey Garden is an informal woodland garden located near Minstead in The New Forest.  It has an excellent cafe and shop and exists to raise funds to support those with learning difficulties providing horticultural training and employment. Your Society has given financial support on several occasions in recent years and we thought it about time we paid them another visit. With all the COVID restrictions in 2020, and further uncertainty about what would be possible this year, Furzey was ...

Marmalade Competition

The marmalade competition, the only surviving event from the cancelled HWHS Annual Show ('Home Produce', Class 65), reached its exciting conclusion this morning ouside Woodgreen Community Shop. Renowned fruit preserve connoisseur, Bobby Pawson, carried out a blind tasting - doubly so, with his eyes closed, hence his clear difficulties locating the butter. The eager entrants stood around waiting for the results, as Bobby tucked into his extended breakfast. After a lengthy read of the morning papers and a coffee or ...

The Judge, Bobby Pawson will be in session outside the shop at 11am to release the winning ...

Annual Show Cancelled

Sadly we have to cancel the Annual Show. The restrictions on numbers for indoor events are just too limiting to be able to run a viable and fun event. We realise that this will come as a big disappointment not least for those nurturing potential exhibits. At least you will have the quiet pleasure of enjoying your own efforts in the garden or on your dinner plate!...
