Welcome!

The Society was founded in 1923 to combine the gardening interests of people in the adjacent Hampshire villages of Hale and Woodgreen. Our aims are to provide a wide range of interesting and informative events, raise significant funds for nominated charities and have a lot of fun. New members, experienced or novice gardeners, are most welcome.

Alternating between the two Village Halls of Hale and Woodgreen, we hold evening talks by invited speakers on a range of horticultural subjects, usually during February, March and April in the early part of the gardening year, and resuming again in September and October. We also hold a plant sale in April where plants can be purchased at very reasonable prices from both professional growers and our membership. Our Annual Show is held in July where members and non-members alike can enter a wide range of competition classes; flowers, vegetables, home produce and so on. The combined AGM and Social evening is held in December. During the year at least one coach trip to a well known garden or gardens is also arranged. Members open their gardens for public viewing biennially, in May for Hale and June in Woodgreen.

TALK: “The History of Stewarts Garden Centres and Nurseries”

by Martin Stewart

Hale Village Hall, 7.30pm

The origins of Stewarts Garden Centres and Nurseries is an interesting story going back 8 generations to 1742. The first purpose-built garden centre in this country was 'Garden-Lands' at Christchurch (now Stewarts Christchurch Garden Centre) which was opened in October 1961 by TV personality Percy Thrower. Garden-Lands was quite possibly the first ‘Out of Town’ retail ‘anything’!

AGM and Social Evening

Hale Village Hall, 7.30pm

This year we liven up the AGM with a performance by “Chapter and Verse”, a group of amateur performers who will entertain us with their rendition of “Gardens and Gardeners”… their delights and foibles. Followed by drinks and an American Supper – please bring a plate of food if you can. Also, see how you do with the Chairman’s quiz. Oh, not forgetting the AGM too.
